Pacific Grove at a Glance
Many California communities are
deeply aware of wildlife protection and Pacific Grove is a strong advocate in
this arena. Monarch butterflies make the Monterey Peninsula city their home and
city law declares it a misdemeanor to kill or threaten this winged insect. Visitors
can experience a Monarch up close in its natural habitat during the months of
October to March through guided tours offered at the Monarch
Butterfly Sanctuary. The natural history of Monterey County can be further
understood through both permanent and temporary exhibits displayed at the Pacific
Grove Museum of Natural History. Guided walking tours and whale watching excursions,
led by local marine biologists, encourage visitors to appreciate nature's wonders,
while the Point
Pinos Lighthouse and surrounding beaches remind visitors of Pacific Grove's
intimate relationship with the sea. If staying in the area during the last week
in July, the public is welcome to interact with Pacific Grove's community at the
annual Feast
of Lanterns.
