Staying in Pacific Grove

• A WorldWeb.com Travel Guide for Pacific Grove, California.
Jutting out into the Pacific Ocean, about 120 mi (193 km) south of San Francisco on California's central coast is a rugged and scenic peninsula of land. It is well known for the two bays and cities that sit either side of it, Carmel and Monterey. There is however an alternative place to stay in the area, located further out on the peninsula—Pacific Grove. The smaller, quieter town sits on the northern most tip of the peninsula and is close to the Del Monte Forest and three golf courses that are located to the south and west along the ocean. Pacific Grove is careful with its natural beauty and location, and is a sanctuary for the vibrant Monarch butterfly, which lives here too.

Those choosing to visit this lesser known city will find an array of accommodations, offering choices in hotels and motels, historic inns and bed and breakfasts, as well as some private vacation rental properties.

PACIFIC GROVE HOTELS & MOTELS

The hotels and motels in Pacific Grove are located in approximately three different areas, the first being along the northwest end of Lighthouse Road, close to the historic Point Pinos Lighthouse, which has been operating continuously since 1855. The hotels here are mostly mid-range lodgings with swimming pools and complimentary breakfasts. The standout upscale hotel in the area is the Lighthouse Lodge and Suites, which offers a lodge with over 60 rooms and a village of 30 suites. Guests can enjoy amenities like a swimming pool and evening wine and hors d'oeuvres. Further alternative accommodation in this area includes a couple of inns with a handful of rooms each.

The second cluster of accommodationis situated in the area southeast of the lighthouse around Lovers Point Bay and a couple of motel and hotel choices here afford guests views over Monterey Bay. Visitors will find a budget and mid-range price option and there is also an upscale 30-room inn and hotel, the Seven Gables Inn, which is set in an old Victorian mansion.

The third area of accommodation options is centered near Spanish Bay, to the southwest of the lighthouse. Hotel properties here fall in the mid to more upscale lodging range. There are a handful of places to stay, including the Inn at Spanish Bay, which is part of the upscale Pebble Beach Resorts. It is located next to The Links golf course and has a shopping arcade and swimming pool. The Asilomar Conference Grounds, which was built in the early 1920s, provides a step back in time for guests with rooms free of televisions and telephones, offering instead peace and tranquillity, which are the watchwords at this property.

BED & BREAKFAST ACCOMMODATIONS

Those wanting smaller more intimate lodging may wish to consider the city's bed and breakfast choices. Numerous old buildings and houses that date from the late 1800s and early 1900s have been converted into both inns and bed and breakfast accommodation, one of which is the Centrella Inn, a national historic landmark that dates from 1889.
